Ambassadors Theatre – Production & Auditorium Lighting Upgrades

Ambassadors Theatre

The Ambassadors Theatre, previously known as the New Ambassadors Theatre, was designed as an intimate and smaller venue, accommodating a maximum of 444 guests, with 195 in the dress circle and 251 in the stalls.

In late 2022, the Ambassadors Theatre underwent a significant upgrade, focusing on electrical enhancements and achieving DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliance. The technical improvements were entrusted to Push The Button (PTB), who efficiently managed the replacement of production lighting, house lighting control, and audio systems during a 12-week closure.

Auditorium Lighting Transformation

The theatre’s auditorium lighting previously comprised various lamp-based fixtures, delivering incandescent illumination throughout the space. These fixtures included clam shells, wall sconces, under stall fittings, and a chandelier. PTB meticulously serviced and where necessary, repaired the existing fixtures. They upgraded the light sources to Zico Lighting lamps controlled by Artistic Licence systems. This upgrade allowed the retention of existing cables and the preservation of the original lighting’s aesthetics while transitioning to more efficient LED lamps with superior dimming performance. To achieve optimal dimming, a custom curve was designed and applied to the dimmers. Additionally, the lamp colour temperature was fine-tuned to 2200k, harmonising with the theatre’s paint finish and seat colours to enhance the overall ambiance.

Production Lighting Revamp

The Ambassadors Theatre had been reliant on ageing Strand STM dimmer racks and their obsolescence necessitated a replacement. PTB introduced ETC ColorSource ThruPower racks, interconnected with custom-made facility panels strategically distributed throughout the auditorium. PTB’s expertise was further showcased through the creation of a custom curved internally wired bar, precisely fitted to the Circle Front, and an additional internally wired bar above the Upper Circle.

Working Light Control Upgrade

In tandem with the auditorium lighting transformation, PTB was also entrusted with modernising the working light control system. The introduction of an ETC Paradigm system now governs the theatre’s working light controls, with a user-friendly touch screen conveniently positioned Down Stage Left. Furthermore, a five-button control panel resides in the control room, while a two-button panel is located at the Stage Door, ensuring seamless and efficient operations.

Production Audio and Data Enhancement

PTB enhanced the Ambassadors Theatre’s audio infrastructure by installing a new audio equipment rack in the basement. Additionally, a range of audio facility panels were fitted throughout the venue. These panels offer versatile Multi-Mode and Single-Mode fibre connections, alongside essential data connections.

IT Infrastructure and Lift Integration

During the course of this project, the Ambassadors Theatre also welcomed a new lift installation. To facilitate the successful integration of the lift, PTB undertook the removal of existing data cables and skilfully rerouted them, ensuring ample space for the new lift’s functionality.

A Project Delivered On Time and Within Budget

PTB successfully delivered the entire project on schedule and within budget. This meticulous upgrade enhances the Ambassadors Theatre’s overall capabilities, providing an improved experience for both guests and staff.
