Opened on 16 November 1899, Wyndham’s Theatre stands as a testament to London’s rich theatrical heritage. Commissioned by actor and impresario Charles Wyndham, this iconic venue was designed by the renowned theatre architect W. G. R. Sprague, who crafted several notable theatres across the city. The theatre seats 799 guests across four levels and is nestled in the heart of London’s West End, close to Leicester Square and Covent Garden. Today, it is part of the Delfont Mackintosh Theatres group and continues to host a variety of high-profile productions.
Recently, the team at Wyndham’s Theatre faced reliability issues with their legacy ETC Unison Paradigm working light system. To address these concerns, they turned to Push The Button (PTB) for a solution.
PTB undertook the task of upgrading the theatre’s lighting control by replacing the outdated ETC Unison processor with the latest ETC Paradigm Architectural Control Processor 3. This new system was seamlessly integrated into the existing lighting network, connecting to the existing patch panels and network switches. The installation included a new touch screen, positioned Down Stage Left within a Paradigm Surface Mount Touchscreen Back Box and a single button panel at the stage exit for the white working lights. A small amount of new infrastructure was required in the form of a network cable from the dimmer room to Down Stage Right, this being added sympathetically to the existing infrastructure. Additionally, a Paradigm 7″ portable touch screen was set up in the control room.
To ensure that the move to a new system avoided creating any issues the team installed all of the new equipment alongside the existing equipment.
The installation was completed within a week and following rigorous testing, the switch-over was executed without disrupting the theatre’s operations. The old equipment was decommissioned and removed, ensuring the technical team at Wyndham’s Theatre could transition seamlessly to a fully updated and efficient lighting control system.
